When snow falls on the landscape, it softens sharp edges and hides some things from view. It can add beauty to something usually seen as ugly, like a junkyard or an abandoned and ramshackle building. We in Western civilization have traditionally avoided the woods, perhaps due to the fact that the Brothers Grimm set some of their scarier fairy tales in the dark Bavarian forest. But the driver in the poem now sees beauty in this dark stand of trees, because of the snow. He thinks that it would be an attractive place to enter. We can also consider this concept to be a metaphor for a final peace and ultimate sleep, that of death. To fit into the line, the poet needed a two-syllable adjective to describe the beauty of the woods. He chose a word that is sometimes used by a man to describe a woman, adding a light reference to its intriguing nature. The driver doesn’t have time to stay and learn more about the woods. Not today.
