Miss Finch’s nephew is Mr. Robert. He is Miss Finch’s only living relative, so it falls to him to wrap up all of Miss Finch’s money and property. Isabel and Ruth are considered part of Miss Finch’s property because they were her slaves. Miss Finch also wrote a will before she died, and the will states that Isabel and Ruth are to be freed.

Mr. Robert denies the existence of the will at all.

“Was there a will?” Pastor Weeks asked him.

“She didn’t need one,” Mr. Robert replied. “I was Aunt Mary’s only relative.”

Isabel firmly defends the existence of the will, and states that she saw it and read it herself. Pastor Weeks asks where the will is now, and Isabel tells him that the lawyer, Mr. Cornell, took it with him to Boston. Mr. Robert has no intention of putting forth any effort to verify Isabel’s statements; therefore, because Isabel has no proof in hand that she is to be freed, Mr. Robert decides he will immediately begin trying to sell Isabel and Ruth.
