In Chapter 19, Lyddie is so consumed by her own loneliness after Rachel leaves that she does not notice that Diana does not seem well. The labor movement is taking hold, and when Lyddie does notice Diana’s plight, she wants to do something for her and decides she will finally sign the petition. When she goes to the meeting she finds that the petition has already been submitted and that she is too late. Diana consoles Lyddie by telling her she can sign the next petition, which will hopefully be more successful, and reveals that she will be leaving. Diana is pregnant by a married man, and does not want her disgrace to become public.
In Chapter 20, Lyddie becomes closer to Brigid, who is turning out to be an efficient worker. Lyddie is shamed by Brigid’s patience with the new girls, and undertakes to teach Brigid to read. Lyddie receives two letters, one from Charlie informing her that he and Rachel are doing well and encouraging her to “think kindly” on Luke Stevens, who loves her. The second letter informs Lyddie that her mother has died.
