Elements of language:

Choice of Words and usage: Diction

Tone: The way you say the words and employ the diction

Accent: The regional and accepted choice of personalizing the diction

Expression: The manner in which the diction is conveyed.

Examples:

Accent- Southern, Bostonian, New Jersey/York

Expression: Italian American mannerisms preserving the elements of the old country; Spanish or Latino ways to express our opinions through our non-verbals.

Diction: Enunciation: Some cities have louder speakers than others- other cities have speakers whose ending of words is quite specific such as: the Southern states, the Eastern States, the Midwest, and, let’s face it- the Western states. So in general, all states have a unique way of communication:

Tone:  Quality or characterized sound. Just like many Asian tongues tend to use higher pitches in mid and last syllables, we tend to emphasize the first syllable as our standard in most every word. However, things do change from North to South in words such as:

theater- In the North is the first syllable that gets the jab. In the South, is the middle syllable.

privacy- In the North, it is “privacy”, but many places in the south say “preevacy”

advertisement- Most people emphasize on the third syllable, yet, many people in the North focus on the second one.

This is just a figment of what goes on with the elements of language. Language is not just a communication tool, but a psychological and social link that makes us all just as much unique as DNA would. That’s why linguists (such as myself) love it so much!
