Vivian, who works in gambling parlors despite having a nursing degree, is Maya Angelou’s mother. Although she had sent Maya and Bailey away as small children, she treats them well later in life. Vivian is known for her breathtaking beauty and warm, bubbly personality, even if this is not always extended to her children. When Maya meets her mother after a long separation at the age of eight, she is struck by the thought that Vivian is so perfect that she cannot be real.

It is arguable that Vivian is not a great mother. To begin with, she sends Maya and her brother, Bailey, to live with a grandmother after her divorce, when Maya was little more than a toddler.
