Jagan is a passive, tolerant man. He lives his life according to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. He is a pacifist, with a deep-seated aversion to violence and confrontation. In keeping with the Mahatma’s teachings, Jagan leads as simple and as natural a life as possible: he’s given up eating rice, a staple food among Indians, to eat ground wheat, honey, and greens instead; he won’t use a toothbrush, preferring to clean his teeth using boiled water; and he gives his beloved wife a flower-based remedy instead of medicine when she has a headache.
Jagan also shows his devotion to Gandhi in his daily routine. When Gandhi visited Jagan’s town twenty years previously, Jagan vowed to spin for an hour each day. He would only wear clothes made from khadi, a hand-spun, home-made natural cloth. He’ll still wear leather, but only if it comes from the hide of an animal that’s already dead. Due to his beliefs, he won’t wear leather from an animal that’s been specifically killed for the purpose of providing material for footwear.
