When the community in The Giver went to Sameness, it gave up a great deal. The Giver says, “We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with differences” (95). The community lost music and also art, presumptively, since art is an expression of individual creativity, and individualism of any kind cannot be permitted in Sameness. When sunshine was lost, there was climate control, which eliminated all variability in weather. The members of the community also gave up memory, sexual desire, love, and individual choices of mates, childbearing, and work. Everyone dresses the same and has the same kind of housing. Children have the same kind of upbringing and even the same kinds of toys. In exchange for giving up all choice and individuality, the community is safe from the risks of the outside world, Elsewhere, such as disease and war, and productive enough to meet the needs of everyone in the community.
