Throughout A Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton changes from being a bitter, cynical drunkard to an idealist who ends his life with true heroism.
When the reader first encounters Sydney Carton he is an unsuccessful, world-weary barrister who has wasted his talents and sought consolation in drinking. He dislikes his young client, Charles Darnay, who so closely resembles him, because Darnay shows him the man he might have been. Initially, this reflection drives him to even greater bitterness, but he is redeemed by his love for Lucie Manette.
Instead of giving way to jealousy, Carton is ennobled by his love, since his greatest wish is for Lucie to be happy. He finds the courage to face death heroically, because he knows that the sacrifice he is making will secure her happiness.
