In William Saroyan’s short story entitled “The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse,” the first time Aram rides the horse is with his cousin Mourad. Aram is amazed at the sight of the horse and dazzled by everything about it. He is filled with exhilaration. He and his cousin were riding bareback, so they would have felt the horse’s every movement:

The air was new and lovely to breathe. The feel of the horse running was wonderful.

Later, when he rides the horse by himself, he is filled with fear because he is unable to make the horse obey his commands. The horse refuses to move, and when it does move, it rears and runs, leaving Aram feeling out of control and lacking in the way with horses that his cousin Mourad has, as he says,

I leaped to the back of the horse and for a moment knew the awfulest fear imaginable. The horse did not move. Kick into his muscles, my cousin Mourad said. What are you waiting for? We’ve got to take him back before everybody in the world is up and about. I kicked into the muscles of the horse. Once again it reared and snorted. Then it began to run. I didn’t know what to do. Instead of running across the field to the irrigation ditch the horse ran down the road to the vineyard of Dikran Halabian where it began to leap over vines. The horse leaped over seven vines before I fell. Then it continued running.

After Aram falls, Mourad shows no concern for him because the stolen horse is now loose, and he has to find it or the secret of the stolen horse will become known, which would be a disaster for this family known for its honesty.
